The Massage & Lash Image

I love eye lash extensions and highly recommend them to all my brides... and everyone else for that matter :) This week I had the privilege of photographing the lash application process and I had so much fun. Leslie has a steady hand, a good eye and is very patient. Here are a couple detailed shots documenting the process. A big thank you to Andrea Larson for being such a lovely lash model. http://www.massagelashimage.com/

Liam | 3 weeks old

This morning I had the pleasure of photographing baby Liam. I was hoping he would sleep so we could do some fun poses with him, but he just wanted to be awake the whole time. Since he was bright eyed and bushy tailed I was able to capture a wide array of emotions and expressions. Here are a few of my favorites.

Jeff & Laine | Family

Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing Jeff and Laine Barnsley and their two young boys Noah (4) and Levi (1). They were the winners of our February contest that gave away a free 1 hour family photo session. For the shoot we went downtown around the historic distric, Track 29 and the train depot. The weather cooperated nicely and I was able to get some fun photographs of the family hanging out. The two boys had lots of energy and kept me on my toes. I hope they all had as much fun as I did. Here are a few of my favorites.

Professional Photographer vs. Uncle Bob – who should you hire?

Part 1 -

Good ole’ Uncle Bob – every family has one or two of these fellas. You know who I am talking about. He’s the guy with a DSLR Camera and is itching to prove he can use it. Occasionally we find ourselves in competition with Uncle Bob for the privilege of photographing a wedding.

Uncle Bob may be a perfectly capable photographer, but unless he’s an aspiring wedding photographer chances are he hasn’t shot very many of them. Weddings are many things but most tend to be at least a little chaotic. It’s a job that demands professionalism and the ability to respond to changing lighting situations, manage timelines and people, etc. For the sake of brevity, this blog post is just going to focus on the differences in gear between amateurs and professionals.

Just in terms of equipment the difference between the images Uncle Bob will produce and what we will produce is profound. Uncle Bob probably has an entry level DSLR, like the Canon Rebel or the T3i .These are nice little cameras, no doubt, but they are not what the professionals are using. The cameras used by professionals make a difference in terms of the quality of the images, particularly in low light conditions.

The lenses used by professionals are also far and away better than the lenses commonly found on entry level DSLR cameras. We exclusively use ‘L’ series lenses from Canon and they are the best lenses they produce. Compared to their cheaper Canon built alternatives they focus faster (critical in fast moving action), take crisper images (in part due to their state of the art image stabilization technology) and employ better quality glass for their lenses which reduce chromatic aberrations (a technical term used to describe how the lens distorts color). I could go on but you get the idea – lens quality plays an equal if not greater role than the quality of the camera itself.

Last but not least we have off camera flash. Honestly when it comes right down to it this is what ultimately separates amateurs from professionals. Some call themselves ‘natural light’ photographers which is a cleverly marketed way of saying they don’t have off camera flash. Shooting ‘natural light’ is great and we do it all the time, but there are many situations that require more light, like when taking pictures indoors. Why is having the flash off the camera better than on camera? Simple: On camera flash is so close to the image sensor that it fills in all the areas of the subject with light. What you are left with is a flat looking image because there are no facial shadows to reveal form for the viewer. The cameras we use don’t even have a flash built into them, which should speak volumes about the value of on camera flash to the average professional.

All of this gear takes a fair amount of capital investment to accumulate, and that is one reason why professional photographers charge what they charge. Honestly this photography subject really deserves to be more in depth, so I promise to follow up with more details including examples using photos.

Stefanie & Tyler | Maternity

After this session I'm pretty sure I love maternity shoots! Stefanie & Tyler are such a nice couple and I really enjoyed getting to know them. Stefanie had really creative ideas for the shoot & it made it even more fun for me. It was hard to choose just a couple, but I think these are among my favorites.

New Toy Alert: 100mm f/2.8L Macro

Today we became the proud owners of Canon's 100mm Macro lens (f/2.8L). Having added the 50mm back in December we now have two Prime lenses in our arsenal.

The 100mm is often used for taking close-up shots with stunning clarity and detail. This is an excelent lens to use when photographing the bride & grooms wedding rings & also useful in capturing details on the wedding cake. I've included a couple of pictures shown below, one of Kira's eye and the other our wedding rings. This camera is no one trick pony, however, as it also makes a great portrait camera and will also be useful during ceremonies, receptions, etc.

Lashes by Leslie | eye lash extensions

I've heard great things about eye lash extensions & I absolutely love seeing them on brides so I decided to give them a try. So far they're wonderful! It's nice to wake up in the morning & look beautiful before you even apply make-up. You might as well throw out the mascara because once you try these you'll be hooked. The lashes generally last 6-8 weeks & it's recommended that you get a fill every 3-4 weeks. It's a simple & low maintenance way to enhance your appearance.
I would highly recommend getting lash extensions for your wedding day, they look great in photos.

Central Washington Bridal Show 2012

The 2012 Central Washington Bridal show, and unofficial start to the 2012 wedding season, was held yesterday at the Yakima Convention Center in downtown Yakima. Featuring nearly 70 of the Yakima Valley’s finest wedding vendors the show offered a one stop shopping experience for hundreds of brides (and grooms).
New this year the show was held at the Convention Center and the comments from vendors and brides alike were overwhelmingly positive (from a photographers perspective, the lighting was much better). Another new feature this year was the fashion show. There were two shows, one at 3:00 pm and the other at 4:00 pm, and by 2:30 the line to get in was already several hundred feet long. Suffice it to say the show was a rousing success and the buzz generated from it substantial.
Below is a sampling of pictures from the Bridal show.

Christmas Crafts & Family

Wow, It's been a while since I've blogged! Life is hectic sometimes so that makes it hard to keep up an online presence. We just moved into a new house a few weeks ago & I've been so excited to be able to decorate for Christmas. We don't own a lot of Christmas decorations though & while I plan to do some after Christmas shopping to stock up for next year that leaves this year without much to decorate with; so I decided to make some of my own. After a couple of crafting sessions with friends I finally finished some button ornaments. I totally love these, they are so simple & add a lot of fun to the tree. We also FINALLY took a family picture. Believe it or not, we only have a couple of all three of us. I can't wait until spring so we can take some outside but for now the indoor pictures in front of the Christmas tree will have to do.

Ornament Instructions: I used two pieces of wire to put the buttons on. After you get a long stack of buttons going wrap it around in a circle wind the wire together. Then tie a piece of ribbon on & make a bow! Simple:)
